Material Info and Care of Items

Polymer Clay

I use strong, good-quality clay, never softer,
weaker brands of clay. Polyclay does not shatter
like earthen clays, but it's important to avoid scratching its surface. Polyclay is vinyl, so it does not like extremely high temperatures (same reason your car's dash can crack). But my clay trilobites should last for many years if they're not abused.

Pendants on Adjustable Cord

Cord is of course vulnerable to cutting and
burning, so don't do that. I am currently using
either nylon parachute cord or polyester cord,
which are more fray-resistant than other types
of cord I've tried.

Pieces on "Beading Wire"

My necklaces strung on 49-strand wire cable
are fairly rugged, and typically can only be cut
with wire cutters and similar instruments. The
wire is nylon-coated, very flexible, and
specifically designed for stringing beads. I
typically use strong "base metal" findings in
my pieces.

Trilobite Line Info

I make polymer clay elements in my
Trilobites line by hand using my own
molds that I sculpted myself. There is no
paint or other secondary surface material
on these; I make the pieces in
one color and bake them, then inlay
them with the second color of clay
and bake them a second time.

Trilobites were marine arthropods,
now extinct. They were very diverse in
size, form, and lifestyle, and lived in
waters around the world. They lived between
521 and 250 million years ago,
and died out in the mass extinction that
marked the end of the Permian period
of the Paleozoic geological era.

My Trilobite pieces depict the dorsal
side of the trilobites, as known
from fossils. The softer undersides of
trilobites are rarely found preserved, but
those few examples show feathery legs
on the ventral (under) sides of the
animals. The ventral sides of my pieces
just have my initials in them.

To me trilobites and other fossils
represent the vastness of time. They
remind us that our lives are precious
fleeting moments.
